Electric sailing cost about 0,21 euro per hour electricity at full power. When you use fuel, it cost about 2,28 euro per hour at full power.


An electric motor need almost none maintenance. Unlike a gasoline engine, which has about 1 time per 1-2 years maintenance necessary.

Sailing with solar panels

When you sail with solar panels you do not need to charge your battery and you can leave the battery on the boat. Also charges your battery while cruising when the sun is shining. In the sunny months (April – September) loads your battery in 2 days completely.

Energy research has multiple sizes solar panels, for example, you can choose to have two smaller solar panels to use. You can also choose to have multiple batteries to use.

Flexible solar panels

The flexible solar panels of Energy Research have a bend radius of 30 degrees. Also, these solar panels are light in weight (1.5 till 2 kg), this allows the solar panels to be mounted on the biminiroof.

Lead-acid VS ER Lithium

Batteries have become irreplaceable in our society, you can see them pretty much anywhere. When you look around you will see multiple applications of battery use. Think of your smartphone or laptop, but also a car. For example, almost any device that doesn’t have a continuous power supply has a battery. Many people, that have not done the research, will rather choose for a lead-acid battery than a lithium battery.

Lithium is just better

This is mainly because the price of a lead-acid battery may appear lower than the price of a Lithium battery. But in fact the price per usable watt of a lithium battery is far lower. When you look at the total lifetime it becomes very apparent lithium is the better choice because a Lithium Battery has over 8 times as much power in its total lifetime. When you are sailing with solar panels the electricity is free. When you are sailing with a gasoline engine, it costs about 0.70 euro per hour. Also you need maintenance once every few years. An electric motor has almost none maintenance required. After about 20 times sailing you are break-even compared to an gasoline engine.
